  1. Size matters! At least when it comes down to the finite element size. To cover different layers of fiber orientation in a fiber reinforced material it is necessary to use a fine mesh, but to keep the cpu time low, it has to be as coarse as possible. I´d like to share with you the following experience: - Midplane meshes of course are the best opportunity to caver as much information over the thickness as possible since it is simply your choice how many layers you´d like to use. - A Hexahedral mesh is nice to keep dof low, but can only cover as many information as there are elements over the thickness. - Tetrahedral meshes usually take less time in preprosessing and are usually the best choice to represent complex geometries. For short fiber reinforced materials they have another benefit. The center of each Tet-element is slighty shifted over the thickness and therefore, covers different information. In this picture you see the fiber orientation distribution function over the thickness (legend) and an example micrograph showing this effect in a real part. The different mesh types have different pros and cons when used to take these effects into account:

    Lattice structure minimum diameter

Hello Normally a lattice optimization does create lattice structures of different elements. Does a way exist to set a minium diameter of the lattice structure? I know the function 'MINRAD', which cleans in the second optimization phase and eliminates all elements above the set value. If I use MINRAD, almost all lattice structures are eliminated, as they are quite small (between 0.0027 and 0.335 mm). The ideal lattice structure would have diameters above 0.5 or 1 mm. How can this be set? I thank you in advance for your help!
  4. Hi all, How to control the element size for a volume 3D mesh? For example, how can we set the element size for a local area to control the local element mesh? Roy

    Deciding Element Size

Recently I meshed a model, almost Rectangular block with size 850 X 200 X 200 with an element size of 10 and carried of analysis. After extracting stress values I again meshed the model with element size of 8. I observed that by changing the element size values(decreasing) my stress results were changing drastically and kept increasing. I was not able to conclude to a point and unable to decide the correctness of my analysis. How shall I decide element size?
  6. Hello everybody, I want to perform an explicit analysis in radioss. I have read that we follow a time step of 1E-06 sec for steel with minimum element size of 5 mm. In my case the element size goes up to 1 mm. I have gone through the book "Crash Analysis with Radioss", according to which we have to look for two formulae to calculate the time step- one is elemental time step and the other is nodal time step. With an approximate sound speed of 5000 m/s through steel, I calculated the time step of 2E-07 sec [i.e., 1 mm / 5000 m per sec]. But I am not able to figure out how to calculate the nodal time step? Would somebody help me out with this? My question is - how much smaller time step would I require to take (for steel) in this case? [Please suggest me an optimum- rough estimate for the element size of 1 mm for steel by taking into consideration the nodal time step also].
  7. I have meshed a geometry using voxel mesh with element size 0.5mm. I have seperated the mesh for design and non design space for topo optimisation. But now I feel the element size is too small and want to only change the element size to say for example 5mm (voxel mesh). How can I do it. I don't want to redo the whole model again.?( Like seperated the design and non design space ). Please guide me.

    Quality Check

How can we do quality check for large number of 3D elements? The quality check tool is under 2D panel and is for 2D elements. But for assembly with large number of 3D elements what is to be done?

    ELEMENT SIZE CRITERIA & QUALITY

How do we decide the element size to be used for meshing? I have a cylindrical geometry of about 30 meters in diameter & 9 meters in height. After meshing, on what basis do we decide the threshold element size for quality checking in quality index?
  10. Hi !! how to find minimum , average , Max. element size of component when customer didn't give the details about.
