  1. Number of plies as variable

    Hello, How can I make the number of plies as the variable rather than the thickness of the ply, since the ply thickness has to be 0.2 mm, and the number of layers can change. And I see that there is nothing like manufacturing thickness when I connect HyperWorks to HyperStudy. I'm using GA as solving algorithm. Thank you.

  3. I'm planning to use HyperStudy for multi objective Optimization of laminated composite structure, and I wanted to know it is possible to make orientation of ply as one of the design variable? I want optimum angle for ply, for the given load condition, rather than sticking with the angle given by user. Thank you.

    Im getting the following error when i tried to put composite shaft with constrains Mass, and Composite Failure Upperbound 1. The Objective Function is Min Compliance. *** ERROR # 1807 *** Composite failure responses are applied to ply 9 which belongs to a topology or free-size domain. Help needed, Thank you
  5. Hey all, currently I am working on a composite optimization process that involves no 45 and -45° plies. What I experienced was, that with the step 3 (shuffle optimization), optistruct did not consider my constraint of maximum ply successor. Is this a knows issue? Additionally, why can't we define pairing constraints between other plies than the 45 and -45° ? Is there a physical reason why you would do that just with 45 and -45 ? Thanks and best regards Merula
  6. Hey, so I've been working on a composite optimization of a formula student monocoque and run into a problem. Following the tutorial preparated everything for the continuous size optimization and started the optimization in optstruct, but after iteration 0 and iteration progress 93% i just stops without an error and says "job complete". why is that? I've tried everything i know so far. I inpected the .out file and after the design property table of iteration 0 there is nothing more, the file ends there. On other design steps of the same model, I got it all the way though from freesize to shuffle with no problem. just this latest step is giving me trouble. I even can run the various optimization steps again with no problems. Any sugestions on why this isn't working would be great, I sadly can't share any (.hm or similar) files due to non-disclosure.   7. Hey Guys! I have experimental data for composite tension compression and bending (3-point and 4-point) due to my university and I want to make a material card that can describe all of the mentioned test (and behavior) with proper accuracy. I would like to make tension, compression and bending (3-point and 4-point) test in Optistruct but I haven't make coupon test before. In the real tests the loads (movement of the clamping jaws) move at constant velocity. I have no experiment how to model such kind of load in Optistruct. I think there should be some non-linearity in the test because of the large displacement. How should I properly model such kind of problem? Do you have any experiment in modeling with velocity load in Optistruct? A further problem will be the bending tests where I think I should use contact surface to model the geometry of the bending machine tool's head. In Optistruct I used slide contact before, but it didn't work to well because of large displacement. Is it possible the handle open gap contact and make the 3-point/4-point bending in Optistruct? If you have any model for bending and tension and compression could you share with me? I would like to study the pre-process method to understand the nature of the coupon test in Optistruct.   8. Dear all, I am trying to run a composite size optimization. I want to find the optimal thickness of each ply I have created in my laminate. My model consists in shell elements. I only have created one laminate that have multiple plies. I want to optimize each ply thickness. I tried with the "ply thickness" and PTMIN and PTMAN but did not work (minimize mass subjected to displacement). No iterations are run and it just gives me the results of a normal FEM analysis. Any idea why? Or how should I do it? Second question..I inserted the control card "global output request" CSTRESS CSTRAIN CFAILURE. The first two work fine, but I can not see the results of Composite Failure after the FEM analysis. It just gives me all value of 1. Any suggestion on how I can see the failure results of the composite? Thank you very much!!!!
  9. Hi guys, I'm currently developing a complex composite structure und simulated it already with optistruct with shell elements (Mat8, PCOMPP). In order to distuguish different failure mechanisms I need analyse the stress in thickness direction of the structre. For that I used the "shell-to-solid conversion" within the aerospace menu. Now that I have a solid mesh, I'm not sure how to proceed. What property do I assign to the solid mesh ? What material card do I use for it ? Do I need to assign the material orientation to the new mesh again and if yes, how do I do that ? Thanks in advance
  10. Error 14: Missing Mat # 3

    Hi, I am a new user to Hyperworks. I am trying to analyse and optimize a composite monocoque chassis. I haven't gotten to the optimization part yet as I'm stuck trying to even run the analysis. Every time I try to run the analysis I get the following error: *** ERROR 14: Missing MAT # 3 referenced by PLY # 3, (existing MAT with this ID is of incorrect type). *** ERROR 14: Missing MAT # 3 referenced by PLY # 8, (existing MAT with this ID is of incorrect type). What I have done is that I have a symmetric stack of 2 layers of carbon fiber, aluminium honeycomb and 2 layers of carbon fiber. I have defined carbon fiber as MAT 8 and the honeycomb as MAT9ORT. The property I have specified for the geometry is PCOMPP. I have added pin joints to the rear suspension and a torsional load at the front suspension. I understand that another thread has been posted about this but I don't understand what the replies are telling me to do. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi, i want to assign mat direction for composite layup in a bicycle wheel but am running into issues. \not sure if it is the way i have setup my cylindrical coordinate system or assigning the mat directions. - my goal is to have the directions tangentially around the center for the vertical walls. i have attached what i am currently getting. - along the circumference on the cylindrical walls. quasi_static_nospoke_hub.hm
  12. Hey Guys! I would like to model composite coupon and make a lots of runs using RADIOSS, because I have a lots of measurements data and I would like to make a proper model for it. I want to make 3-point bending, tension, compression etc. and experience the behavior of the model in the post-yield phase (after the failure of some fibers). If I have the results of the measurements, I should export the material data into RADIOSS from a .csv or .xls file. I should optimize the parameters of the material card in RADIOSS to approximate the measured results of the composite coupon. This process should be automatized (because of the many runs and many setup options of the material properties). I would like to use PYTHON scripts to change the values of the material card in the .csv or .xls file for different runs. Can you tell me anything about how we can use PYTHON scripts in HyperMesh/RADIOSS or if it is not able, how we can connect them to TCL/TK scripts? And another question is that how can I reference to the parameters of the material card in TCL or PYTHON scripts? How can I export the results of a specified node or element (stress, strain, displacement or something) to an excel compatible format (.xls, .csv)? Thanks for your answer in advance!   15. Hey Guys! I would like to use Tsai-Wu failure criteria for composite analysis and I have two questions about it. I would like to know which is the maximal load that my composite system can handle, so which load occurs that the failure index is equal to 1? How can I model it? Failure index isn't suitable to scale my design therefore I would like to know the strength ratio of my composite elements. How can I get the proper strength ratios values? (I did not find the proper output card for this matter). You can see the Tsai-Wu failure theory and the strength ratio calculating method in my attachment. Thanks for answers in advance!   16. Hello, currently i am writing Master Thesis about homogenization of composite material and i would like to make a simulation of behaviour of RVE in HyperMesh (solver OptiStruct). In this forum i found information that i should use PERBC card but i can't find this card in student version (i have 2017 and 14 version). Does somebody have tutorial how to use PERBC card or is it possible to apply periodic boundary condition in student edition without this card? I make dof=0 in normal direction on three face and i want to make opposite faces flat and parallel to blocked faces. I have 3d model with tetra mesh. model.tif
  17. Hello Forums, I want to setup a composite forming simulation in Hyperform using the Multilayered approach but with resin in between the plies. On the forums I found the example from the attached .rad files, but I don't really understand how it is setup.. I always thought the multilayered approach uses one blank for one ply, in this example all plies seem to be combined in one single blank and the resin components showing in the Modeltab are not even included in the User Process Tab. I hope someone can give a short explanation or tutorial on how to properly setup the resinlayers in User Process.   19. Hello, I'm trying to get in Hypergraph (T01 file) the results (stress, strain mainly) for composite material (Law 25 CRASURV Formulation). HyperGraph gives me results in two possible coordinate systems: - Default: Element Coordinate System - Skew: Coordinate system for stress output set by user I want that Hypergraph give me stress in a material coordinate system. For example, if I want hypergraph plot sigma X, I want to be sure that Hypergraph is plotting stress in the direction of the fiber (UD Example). In short, I want to know if it is possible for Hypergraph to plot the results in the material coordinate system such as Hyperview can do when Resolved In: Ply System is selected. Thank you in advance

    Hi, Is it correct to use area connectors( adhesive) to model epoxy bonding between two CFRP Parts? If so, how to define the properties of the adhesive and which property Card Image and material Card Image should I use. Thank you in advance. Cheers, Mithun.
  21. Hi, I am new to composite analysis in Hyperworks. Could someone explain how to define adhesive joints in a ply based model? The idea is to join two seperate components that are manufactured seperately using adhesive. For example joining the flages of an hat section to another surface.

  23. Hello everybody, i want to create a simple forming simulation with composite material. I want to form 2 plies, 0° and 90° fiber orientation.   24. FEM Simulation of 3D Fiber Structures

    Dear HyperWorks Team, I have a question regarding the Fiber Optimization with Optistruct. Is it possible to not limit the optimization of Fiber Directions inside a solid to a 2D layer? More specifically I am working on a project where we put Carbon Fiber Tows into a Wooden Base Product in a completely free manner (the Carbon Fibers can be put as fully three-dimensional Spline Curves inside the Base Material). Therefor I am looking for a Tool where I can simulate both 1. the Anisotropic behaviour of the Wood, built from various layers/directions 2. Optimize the 3D-Structure of Reinforcement Tows of Carbon Fiber inside this Base Material. I am pretty confident, that 1. is possible, but I couldn't find documentation for anything like what we want to do in 2. Can you help me out with this?
